When I was a little girl, I adored baby dolls. At one point I had twenty-seven “babies”. They each had their own bed lovingly crafted out of shoe boxes. Grandma gave me scraps of fabric for their pillows and blankets. Of course babies who were so well cared for had individual names…mine were all named some variation of Elizabeth Ann. Beth, Ann, Liz, Lizzy, Annie, you get the idea. Well. Twenty-six of them were. Number twenty-seven was a tiny little thing with dark curls and a soft yellow nightgown. Her name was Tina.
Total side note – can I even begin to explain how disappointing it was to discover my now-husband’s little sister was named Elizabeth Ann? A tiny piece of my little girl dreams died when I realized that if I married him I wouldn’t have a Beth of my own. Good thing I really like that guy 😉
Anyway, I LOVED my babies as a child and one of my biggest parenting joys has been having a daughter as doll-crazy as I was. My sweet girl is a good baby-doll mama, and they’re always room for one (or twelve) more. Her birthday is this weekend and I can just picture the sheer joy in her face when her new baby is unwrapped; complete with her own quilt, tiny little hat and extra diapers. This doll will be cooed over and fiercely loved. She’ll be named immediately and introduced to all of her baby doll sisters within moments. I wouldn’t be surprised if my daughter wakes up during the night a few times this week just to check and see that everything is alright.
When I watch my little girl with her dolls and realize how my heart swells over it every time, I can just imagine how our heavenly father looks at us. At you.
You are treasured, my friend.
God’s love for you is so big it can barely be compared to anything else. Just as my feelings for my most treasured doll are just a glimmer of how I feel about my own crazy kiddos, those feelings are just a dim picture of God’s feelings for His children. You, Treasured One, are His child. He knew you before you were ever conceived. He has plans and dreams for you. He wants to mend your brokenness and help you find pure joy in Him. If it’s been awhile since you’ve really talked to Him, take some time today. It doesn’t have to be a whole planned thing. Tell Him how you feel, what’s going on, what you’re excited about, and where you could really use His help. He can’t wait to spend time with you.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” 1 John 3:1
