That’s not creepy at all right?!
But for real: are there people you have gotten to know through social media or blogs or books & you know you could totally be friends with them? There are a few woman I can name off the top of my head & I just know if we knew each other in normal life we could totally be friends. So here is my creeper list [bahahah]:
Lara Casey is an amazing blogger & writer & is the founder of Southern Weddings magazine. Her first book is called Make It Happen & it is fantastic- I highly suggest adding it to your reading list; but those things are not the reasons I added her to this list. She is honest & real, both in her book & blog, but also on social media.
We all have those friends who just fake it like they have it all together & that they don’t have struggles & that life is good all the time and even though we know it isn’t true, we still fall into the trap of believing it or comparing our reality to their highlight reel. Lara, however, gives you an honest dose of reality & struggles of life, but she does it without complaining- so refreshing. She always seems to have a smile on her face, even when times are bad. You kind of can’t help but love her for her realness.
Aside from her that, she is a hustler- in the best way possible. In addition to writing books & being the Editor-in-Chief of Southern Weddings, she is the namesake & face of Lara Casey shop & the creator of, the infamous, Powersheets I talk about so much. She is also a mother of 3 & plans to home school too. We all need a friend who inspires us to reach for the sky, don’t we?
If I only ever befriend one woman from this list, I want it to be Emily. I just don’t even have words. Piggy backing on the reasons I added Lara Casey, Emily is all of those things too. She runs Emily Ley Paper– i.e. the Simplified Planner [you know what I’m talking about] from her dinning room turned corporate headquarters. She runs a staff of 5 & has 3 kids, 2 of which are 1.5 year old twins.
I just love her story; from the reason she started her company to her struggle with infertility to her reasons for wanting to spread the message of grace not perfection. She is just so positive & so incredibly real at the same time. She frequently posts pictures or instastories of her messy house, which let’s be honest- that makes us all feel better to see someone else’s dirty house. But she also makes me want to be a better mom, because she just loves her kids so deeply & is obviously so thankful for them after her infertility battles.
Her frist book Grace Not Perfection is coming out later this fall & I cannot wait to read it- because it is just more of the message that all of us mammas so desperately need.
Who doesn’t want to be friends with this woman? Her style, both design & dressing, is just so cute & so down-to-earth. But again, those are not the reasons I added her to this list. She just seems so easy to be around & genuine. I read an article not too long ago, from one of their Fixer Upper families, that said she is just as nice in person as she appears to be on tv.
One of my favorite things about her is that she is not afraid to put her faith out there. She does it in a way that isn’t obnoxious or pushy, but it is very clear that there is something different about her. From the first time I watched the show, I saw something different & then I realized it is a joy that only God can provide. Matthew 5:15 says… “you are a light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” The Gaines’ worked hard for many years before Fixer Upper came along & God blessed them with a platform & they have not hidden their faith. It is just so beautiful to see.
Also, don’t they just look like a fun couple to be friends with? Seeing the tiny glimpses of how they are raising their kids, reminds me of the good-days-gone-by. I just want to glean from their parenting skills, because for real…they just look like they know what they are doing- in parenting & in marriage. In a time when marriage is under attack & the traditional family is almost non-existent in the media, they are an awesome example of showing love & respect to one another. Ahhh, I just love her.
This is the woman who started this idea. Years ago, she posted something online & I commented “oh we could so be friends” & she actually commented back to me the same. So I shift complete & total blame of this post to Jasmine Star. But for real, Jasmine is the woman who started all of this for me, in a way. When I started as a photographer 7 years ago, it was her willingness to just put it all out there to help other photographers grow, that really helped me learn. I learned how to blog & navigate social media & the technical & lighting side of photography. I feel like she has been a mentor to me… & she doesn’t even know me. Yet! [bahahaha, that is so not creepy in the least- lol]. But for real, some day her & I, yeah we’ll be friends. I just know it.
Jasmine is all about keeping it real, KIR as she calls it, & that is probably my favorite thing about her. She seems to have a really good sense of humor & can laugh at herself & doesn’t seem to take herself too seriously. She also frequently talks about her Puerto Rico descent & being a former military kid & pastors daughter & growing up in California. Minus the Puerto Rico part I am like “amen sista” on all accounts. [FYI. I spent 10 years of my childhood as a military brat, all of my teen & adult years as a pastor’s kid, & spent a big part of my teen years in California- in case you don’t know that].
She, like Joanna Gaines & all of the woman on this list, is not ashamed of her faith & puts it out there but not in an ugly or bible bashing way. She gets that not everyone believes what she does, but she seems to realize that everyone needs a little truth & love in their life, whether they do or don’t agree with her.
Now you want to talk about strong personality, lets move onto my last friend,
Bianca Olthoff…Jasmine’s twin sister.
I absolutely love to hear Bianca speak because she just has some finger snapping, head wagging, lip pursing attitude & I just can’t even. Bianca is a writer & speaker & let me tell you, homegirl can deliver the word of God. Can I get an amen- there is nothing ghetto about me, but this woman just brings it out…mmmmhhhhmm!
Bianca is also the Chief Storyteller at The A21 Campaign, so she really is so incredibly gifted in speaking. When I was preparing to speak for the first time a few months ago, I listened to Bianca’s messages leading up to the day of the conference. She really is a fantastic communicator. In February, I had the chance to hear her speak at the local IF:Gathering & I was so excited. I feel like I was the only one in the room that got her particular flavor, so it kind of felt like her & I had an inside joke.
I can’t really put my finger on why I like her so much. Her & her sister both just seem like such fun people to be around. One of the things that sets her apart from the rest of this list though is that I have a feeling, her & I will cross paths one day. Mark my words, ladies. I said it here first.
What about you? Who are your unsuspecting best friends? Share with me on the Instagram post- I know you have them.
